Volleyball Tames UMBC, 3-2

BALTIMORE, MD (Sept. 25) - The GW volleyball team won its third straight match with a 25-30, 30-22, 30-20, 26-30, 15-8 non-conference victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Tuesday night in Baltimore. Sophomore Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) led all players with her career-high 21 kills and a team-high 26 digs while hitting .294.
Freshman middle blocker Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN) added 15 kills in 33 swings for a .364 hitting percentage. The A-10 Rookie of the Week also added three block assists and 13 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Molly Law (Denver, CO) had her best match as a collegian with 15 kills in 33 attacks for a .333 percentage to go with 25 digs and a pair of block assists.
GW (3-6, 2-0 A-10) recorded 125 digs-just one shy of the school record for digs in a five-game match. The Colonials hit .170 as a team with 12 block assists in the two-hour, five-minute match.
The Colonials hit .238 (8-3-21) in the decisive fifth game while UMBC managed to hit just -.091 (3-5-22).
UMBC (6-8) was led by Dana Cookson's 16 kills and Jennifer Davis' match-high 27 digs. The Retrievers hit .121 with 53 kills and 118 digs.
The Colonials return to conference action Friday, Sept. 28, when they play Fordham in a 7:00 p.m. match in the Bronx.
