WASHINGTON, DC (September 2, 2001) - The Colonials lost a close match against DC neighbor American at Georgetown's Harbin Field in the championship match of the DC College Cup.
George Washington (1-1-0) struggled to find an offensive flow, as American (2-0-0) held the Colonials to seven shots for the game. The Eagles used a relentless attack to test GW's keeper Nick Parypinski who turned in a fine performance. Parypinski made eight saves on 21 shots by the Eagles, making some spectacular one-on-one saves versus AU players who broke free behind GW's defense.
The two teams played scoreless soccer until AU's Shawn Kuykendall headed in a redirected pass out of Parypinski's reach for the score in the 69th minute of play. GW made strong runs at the Eagles' defense in the final 20 minutes, but were unable to convert them into scores.
The Colonials' Matt Pilkington, Michael Goldman and Nick Parypinski were all named to the DC College Cup All-Tournament Team.
GW next hosts VMI in their home opener on Thursday, September 6th at 3:00 p.m. at their new facility on the George Washington University's Mount Vernon Campus.
