WASHINGTON, DC (September 6, 2001) - The George Washington men's soccer team overcame a second-half comeback by the Virginia Military Institute Keydets with a three-goal barrage over a ten-minute span of time to seize a 5-2 victory.
In their first home match at the new Mount Vernon Athletic Complex, the Colonials took an early 1-0 lead in the first half off senior midfielder Matt Pilkington's (Manchester, England/Sheffield Hallam Univ.) fourth goal of the season. Pilkington received a pass from sophomore midfielder Fabio Andrade (Stoughton, MA/Xaverian Brothers Acad.) and broke behind the defense for the goal.
GW would extend their lead in the second half when junior forward Matt Osborne (Bingham Notts, England/Tootill Comp.) netted his third goal of the season. Senior midfielder Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) played the ball forward to junior midfielder Kirk Lewis (Beltsville, MD/St. John's College HS) who made a spectacular cross to Osborne who then headed it in for the score.
The Keydets charged back, scoring two quick goals, first converting a free kick at the top of the box that was put away by VMI's Garrett Brickner. VMI then scored another goal from outside the box off a drop pass from Daniel Whitehall to teammate Austin Williams who put the ball past a screened Nick Parypinski (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake).
With 20 minutes left in the contest the Colonials responded to VMI's late surge, scoring three goals in 10 minutes to pull away from the Keydets for good. The game-winning goal was scored by Andrade, who put one between the pipes after Osborne and Goldman advanced it deep into the box.
GW added two more scores in the next ten minutes in an offensive outburst. Pilkington would add his second goal on the day, and fifth on the season, with a sliding score off a header in the mouth of the goal by freshman Rob Kirchner (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls HS) who redirected a cross by sophomore defender Sean Ross (Tacarigua, Trinidad/St. Mary's). Kirchner and Ross both picked up their first collegiate points with the assists.
The Colonials (2-1-0) next host St. Francis (PA) on Wednesday, September 12, at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
