WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 18) - The GW volleyball team opened defense of its Atlantic 10 Conference title with a 3-0 victory over visiting La Salle, 30-26, 30-28, 30-27, Tuesday night at GW's Smith Center. It marked the Colonials' first victory of the season.
A pair of sophomores paced the Colonials' attack. Laura Harrison (West Hills, CA) had a team-high 15 kills while Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs in leading GW past the Explorers in a one-hour, 36-minute match.
Freshman outside hitter Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN) hit .476 with 12 kills in 21 swings and a pair of block assists while Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) flirted with a double-double contributing nine kills and nine digs.
Lindsey Viehmann led the Explorers (3-6, 0-1 A-10) with 17 kills while teammate Kristin Russo added nine kills and a team-high nine digs.
After La Salle took a 4-0 lead to open the match, GW battled back to tie the first game at 21-21 and scored nine of the last 14 points to win just its second game of the season. The Colonials again fell behind La Salle, 4-1, to begin the second game but held off the charging Explorers despite three consecutive service aces from Viehmann to pull LU within 27-25.
GW, which entered the La Salle match with a 1-18 record in individual games, won the third game decisively after taking a 5-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way.
A championship banner celebrating last season's A-10 title was recognized between games two and three of the match.
GW (1-6, 1-0 A-10) travels to Pittsburgh Saturday, Sept. 22, to play Duquesne at 7:00 pm.
