Women's Soccer Falls to Navy, 2-0
ANNAPOLIS, MD (Sept. 17). - In its first competition since last Tuesday's national tragedy, the GW women's soccer team was shutout for the first time this season Monday night, Sept. 17, at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, falling to Navy, 2-0. The loss evens the Colonials record at 2-2.
The evening began on a somber note, as the Midshipmen and Colonials bowed their heads in a moment of silence to remember those lives lost in the tragedy, and followed it by reciting the words to The Star Spangled Banner at a flag flown at half mast.
Once play began, Navy gained control of the offensive side of the field and got off as many as 10 shots in the first half. However, it wasn't until the 32:45 mark of the first half that a pair of freshmen were able to work together and give the Midshipmen their first goal. Defender Claire Henry served teammate Katie Eames over the top and Eames took the ball to the far corner and fired in the game-winning goal past GW goalkeeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior).
With a comfortable 1-0 lead at the beginning of the second half, another freshman, Stephanie Parker, found forward Stacy Finley. Finley beat O'Malley to put the Midshipmen up 2-0 with just over a minute gone by in the second half.
The Colonials had their chances throughout the game firing 14 shots at Navy goalkeeper, Kate McFarlane, but McFarlane stood tall in the net and thwarted GW all night long. Senior Erin Coppedge (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) saw several goal-scoring opportunities during the course of the game for the Colonials with one shot hitting the crossbar and two others that resulted in saves.
The Colonials have off until Friday, Sept. 21, when they will travel to College Park, MD to take on the Maryland Terrapins and former GW head coach, Shannon Higgins-Cirovski, at 7:00 p.m.
