Volleyball Falls to GMU, 3-0

FAIRFAX, VA (Aug. 31) - The GW volleyball team opened the 2001 season with a 0-3 loss to George Mason Friday at GMU's John Linn Gym in the first match of the Brion's Grille/Patriot Invitational. The Patriots outscored GW, 30-22, 30-25, 30-20, under the new rally-scoring format for Division I volleyball. The match took one hour, 25 minutes to complete.
Sophomore Sarah Hokom and freshman Molly Law recorded seven kills each to lead the Colonials' attack. Sophomore Ruth Lazzari added six kills and a team-high nine digs while sophomore setter Lauren Dunning contributed 27 assists.
GW (0-1) hit .118 as a team with 37 digs but had eight service errors and five service aces compared to 13 aces and just five service errors by the Patriots.
GMU (1-0) was led by Brazilian Aline Pereira's 21 kills and Jessica Umansky's 11 digs. The Patriots hit .269 as a team with 44 kills and 43 digs.
GW plays two more matches in the Invitational beginning with William & Mary at 4:30 Friday and Illinois at 11:00 am Saturday.
