GW Volleyball Adds Three Recruits for 2001

WASHINGTON, DC (May 10) -- The George Washington University volleyball program has announced that three student-athletes have signed national letters-of-intent to attend the University next fall. GW head coach Jojit Coronel has announced that Amanda Carnahan (Santa Rosa, CA/Santa Rosa H.S.), Katie Downey (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell H.S.) and Kristin Kiefer (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara H.S.) will play volleyball for the Colonials next fall. They join early signees Molly Law (Denver, CO/Mullen H.S.) and Britta Stroman (Edina, MN/Edina H.S.) who signed in December, 2000.
Carnahan, a 6-3 middle hitter from Santa Rosa, CA, plays club volleyball for the Empire Volleyball Club, one of the top junior club teams in Northern California. "Amanda will solidify the middle position for this season," said Coronel. "She has the ability to dominate a match when she is on."
Downey, a 6-2 outside hitter from Caldwell, ID, plays for Club Idaho and joins former teammate Sarah Hokom on the Colonials. She captained both her high school volleyball and basketball squads while leading her basketball team to the 2001 Idaho State Championship. "Katie will be a dominant right side player," Coronel added. "Her size and strength will pay dividends immediately and she will add versatility to the GW offense."
Kiefer, a 5-10 setter from Santa Barbara, CA, is a 1998-99 second team All-Channel League selection and 2000 MVP of the Channel League. She also was named first team All-CIF in 2000 and the 2000 all-County Player of the Year. "Kristin is a polished setter," said Coronel. "She is very physical at the net and knows how to run an offense. She will battle sophomore S Lauren Dunning for playing time."
The newcomers will have an opportunity to see playing time immediately as the defending Atlantic 10 champion Colonials (25-6, 14-2 A-10), graduate six seniors, including five starters, from last year's NCAA Tournament team.
