AMHERST, MA (Oct. 6) - The Colonials volleyball team dropped a three-game match at Massachusetts Saturday by the scores, 30-23, 30-23, 30-22 at Curry Hicks Cage. UMass out-hit the Colonials, .319 to .149 and totaled nine blocks to one for GW. It marked the Colonials' sixth straight match away from home during which they posted a 3-3 record.
The Colonials were led by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) who had 11 kills and freshman Molly Law (Denver, CO/Mullen) who posted her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Law was coming off a 16-kill, 13-dig effort Friday night at Rhode Island.
GW committed 11 attack errors in game three making it easy for the Minutewomen.
Sophomore Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) was the most efficient Colonial offensively by hitting .333 for the second straight match. Lazzari had nine kills in 21 attacks while committing just two errors in the one-hour, 20-minute match. . GW (4-9, 3-3 A-10) got eight digs each from Lazzari and setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA/St. Mary's).
Massachusetts (9-5, 3-3 A-10) was led by Janeen DeMarte's 13 kills. Nitia Small added 11 kills while Clare Baxter put away 10 kills in 14 attempts with no errors to hit a match-high .714.
The Colonials make their long-awaited return to Smith Center Oct. 12 to host Xavier.
