Rhode Island Too Balanced for GW

KINGSTON, RI (Oct. 5) - The Colonials volleyball team suffered its second straight A-10 setback Friday with a 30-20, 30-25, 26-30, 30-26 loss to the University of Rhode Island at URI's Keaney Gym. Five different Rams posted double-figure kills and totalled 14 blocks while hitting .233 as a team. It was the fifth straight victory for the Rams who improved to 5-1 in the A-10.
The Colonials combined to hit .106 with 55 kills, 37 errors in 170 attempts in the one-hour, 52-minute match. Freshman Molly Law (Denver, CO/Mullen) had a career-high 16 kills and 13 digs with a pair of block assists for her finest effort as a collegian.
Sophomore Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA/Connelly) had a strong match hitting .333 with 15 kills in 36 swings while committing just three errors. Lazzari also contributed 10 digs and three block assists. Colonials' outside hitter Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID/Caldwell) added 11 kills while freshman middle blocker Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN) had a team-high 14 digs.
GW got off to another slow start as Rhode Island took a 15-4 lead in game one and coasted. URI had little trouble in game two hitting .341 with 19 kills. GW roared back in game three and grabbed a 16-8 lead but had to hold on as the Rams rallied to within two at 25-23. Game four featured four lead changes and nine ties before the Rams pushed the lead to 23-18. GW closed to within 25-24 before URI scored four straight points to seal the victory.
GW (4-8, 3-2 A-10) out-served the Rams with seven aces to three for URI. Rhode Island also gave away 13 points on service errors.
Rhode Island (8-7, 5-1 A-10) was led by Brooke Ecklund's 14 kills and 18 digs. Amy Kauppila recrded 13 kills and 14 digs for the Rams. Like GW, the Rams opened the season with six straight losses but have rebounded to win eight of its last nine.
The Colonials play their sixth straight road match Saturday at Massachusetts in a 7:00 p.m. contest at Amherst, MA. GW's next home match is Oct. 12 against Xavier.
