WASHINGTON, (Oct. 28) - The GW volleyball team played its second five-game match in its last three outings but came out on top this time edging Fordham, 26-30, 30-26, 30-12, 27-30, 15-10, Sunday afternoon at GW's Smith Center. GW hit .375 in the decisive fifth game to hold off the Rams and snap a seven-match losing skid. Sophomores Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID) and Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) led GW with 20 kills each in the two-hour, six-minute match.
Fordham took game one in a closely-played match where neither team led by more than four points until a kill by FU's Mele Misi gave Fordham a 27-22 lead. Game two unfolded much the same as game one but with GW taking the upper hand late and hanging on for the victory. Game three was all GW as the Colonials rushed out to a 12-3 lead and never looked back. The Colonials combined to hit .419 with 16 kills and just three errors in game three compared to .031 on eight kills for Fordham.
The Colonials took control early in game four and appeared headed for victory with a 15-10 lead before the momentum shifted and the Rams battled back to tie the game at 26-26. Three GW attack errors and a kill by Fordham's Beth Crockett propelled the Rams to a 30-27 come-from-behind victory and forced a fifth game.
GW took charge in game five going up 9-3. Fordham made a 6-0 run including a pair of Mele kills to pull within 12-9 but timely kills by Hokom and freshman Katie Downey (Caldwell, ID) sealed the victory for GW. Downey had one of her best performances of the season with 12 kills in 34 attacks while committing just two errors for a .294 percentage and 10 digs.
Senior Shannon Farley (Hopewell Junction, NY) had her career-high 19 digs and freshman Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN) recorded four block assists and a block solo.
Fordham (6-13, 1-10 A-10) had four players post double-doubles led by Crockett's 14 kills and 12 digs. Roxanne Hill (13 kills, 13 digs), Tiffany Pederson (10 kills, 10 digs) and Misi (10 kills, 10 digs) were the other Rams in double figures for kills and digs.
GW (4-12, 3-6 A-10) plays La Salle Tuesday night at Philadelphia in a 7:00 p.m. match.
