Rams Escape Women's Soccer, 1-0, in Overtime
O'Malley Makes 11 Saves in Loss
WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 26) - Rhode Island senior forward Shannon Kittelson scored her fourth goal of the season in the 98th minute to give the Rams a 1-0 overtime victory over the George Washington Colonials, this afternoon, Oct. 26, at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex. The loss drops the Colonials record to 6-9 overall and to 3-5 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The two teams played back and forth for most of the match with the Rams holding a 23-10 shot advantage due in large part to their dominating play at the beginning of the match. Despite the decided advantage in shots for the Rams, it was the Colonials who had the best scoring chance of the first half. Redshirt sophomore Kim Warner (North York, Ontario, Canada/St. Joseph's) beat her defender on the left side of the box and then slid a beautiful ball to senior Tiffany Williams (Sykesville, MD/Liberty). Williams had Rhode Island keeper Jamie Epperlein beaten, but could not make solid contact with the ball and the Rams escaped.
The second half was an intense struggle with both teams playing well, but strong play in the net by both Epperlein and GW sophomore keeper Christine O'Malley (Davis, CA/Davis Senior) kept the match scoreless. Epperlein finished the match with three saves while O'Malley posted 11.
The Rams started out strong in overtime and finally cashed in when Kittelson collected a loose ball from a scramble in front of O'Malley and found the top left corner of the net to give the Rams the victory. It is the third time this season that the Colonials have lost a conference match in overtime. The Colonials also fell in the extra session to Richmond, 3-2 (double overtime), on Sept. 25 and to Xavier, 4-3, on Oct. 5.
The Colonials return home for their final match of the season at the GW-Mount Vernon Athletic Complex when they face the Massachusetts Minutewomen on Sunday, Oct. 28, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
