WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 21) - The Colonials continued their offensive hot streak scoring six times on 36 shots against conference foe Fordham Rams at George Washington's Mt. Vernon Athletic Complex this afternoon.
The British duo of Matthew Osborne (Bingham, Notts, Eng./Toothill Comprehensive) and Matt Pilkington (Manchester, Eng./Sheffield Hallam) combined to account for four goals and three assists to lead the Colonials over the Rams.
The two squads battled to a stalemate for the first 40 minutes of the match with the Rams' keeper Nathaniel Freihaut stopping a Colonial onslaught of 20 shots, converting 11 saves in that time. GW was able to break through in the final five minutes when senior midfielder Matt Pilkington received a pass in the box from freshman midfielder Rob Kirchner (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls) and converted it for his eighth goal of the season. Senior midfielder Michael Goldman (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy-Chase) started play with a quick pass to Kirchner on the wing.
Less than minute later at the 40:10 mark Pilkington received a pass from Goldman and then served it to his countryman, junior forward Matthew Osborne who blasted it past Freihaut for the second score of the day.
The Colonials fed off their first half momentum, charging out of the gate in the second half. Pilkington scored his second goal of the match at the 46:51 mark when junior defender Kirk Lewis (Beltsville, MD/St. John's College) made a long pass to Osborne who was defended on the close left wing. Battling for control, Osborne headed the ball back to Pilkington who fired it from 18 yards out to notch his ninth score of the season.
Osborne would take his turn next when senior defender Fridrik Omarsson (Seltjarnarnes, Iceland/C. C. of Iceland) stole the ball from a Fordham back leaving himself and Osborne with an unobstructed path to the goal. Omarsson crossed to Osborne who beat a charging Freihaut to put the ball between the pipes for his second score on the day, and ninth of the season.
Newcomer Arnar Johannsson (Reykjavik, Iceland/C. C. of Iceland) continued his stellar play of late, coming off the bench to score his third goal in two matches. The sophomore forward, who was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week on Oct. 16, blasted home his fifth score of the season when Goldman notched his third assist of the match with a long cross to Pilkington in the box. Pilkington barely missed completing the hat trick sending the ball across the mouth of the goal to the close right wing where Johannsson one-timed the it into the net at the 70:49 mark.
GW kept the pressure on high for the remainder of the match, peppering the Rams' goal with 16 shots in the half. The Colonials out-shot the Rams 36-10 on the day. GW would add one more score with six seconds remaining (89:54). Sophomore midfielder Jeremy Catlin (Clarksville, MD/Oakland Mills) collected the ball off a Fordham clear at the top of the box on the left wing and passed it to junior midfielder Jeffrey Lagomarsino (Wilbraham, MA/Wilbraham & Monson Acad.) as he was charging toward the mouth of the goal. Lagomarsino placed it past the keeper to notch his first goal of the season.
The Colonials (7-5-0, 4-3-0) next travel to Kingston, RI to face the Rhode Island Rams on Friday, Oct. 27 in a 7:00 p.m. match.
