KINGSTON, RI (Oct. 26) - George Washington men's soccer lost a hard-fought match 3-1 to No. 22 Rhode Island this evening at URI Soccer Stadium. Rookie of the Week Arnar Johannsson netted his sixth goal of the season in the loss.
URI dominated play early in the contest, out-shooting the Colonials by an 11-1 margin in the first half. GW keeper Nick Parypinski kept them in the contest, making six saves as the teams headed into halftime in a scoreless tie.
The Rams opened the scoring early in the second half as sophomore Perek Bellah took a pass from senior captain Gareth Elliott and senior Ahmad Manning in the box and slipped the ball past Parypinski to give the Rams a 1-0 lead at 51:22. The Rams extended their lead in the 71st minute when Elliott put in a header on a cross from junior Peter Benevides for a 2-0 advantage.
The Colonials cut the lead in half as sophomore forward Arnar Johannsson connected on a pass from back Kirk Lewis and midfielder Michael Goldman at the 78:37 mark. The goal would be Johannsson's sixth of the year, and fourth in three matches.
GW would not be able to get any closer as the Rams held on and added an insurance goal late in the game when Manning found Benevides on a breakaway to make the score 3-1 at 89:27. Parypinski made a season-high nine saves in the losing effort.
