Volleyball Wins Third Straight With Sweep of UMass

WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 29) - Senior Tracee Brown slammed 25 kills in leading GW past visiting Massachusetts, 15-10, 15-2, 16-14, Friday night at GW's Smith Center. Brown hit .590 with 25 kills in 39 swings while committing just two attack errors. The triumph marked GW's third straight sweep of an A-10 opponent while running its winning streak to nine games.
Colonials senior Suzana Manole recorded a double-double with 10 kills and a match-high 18 digs. Setter Jill Levey also doubled with 39 assists and 10 digs to go with a pair of block assists.
UMass was led by Rebecca Hasson's 12 kills and six blocks while teammate Lymarie Llovet added nine digs.
The Minutewomen played the Colonials evenly through the first game which featured 26 side-outs and the teams deadlocked at 10-10 before GW took charge. The Colonials scored five unanswered points on a service ace by Manole and a pair of kills by Levey, including the game-winner.
Game two was all GW as the Colonials hit .356 as a team compared to .179 for the Minutewomen.
Game three saw the teams trade leads five times in a hard-fought contest. After UMass took a 7-4 lead, GW battled back to outscore UMass, 8-2 for a 12-9 advantage. The Minutewomen roared back however, to take a 14-13 lead on a kill by Jen Davis and several Colonial miscues. Brown took charge for GW and had three kills that gave GW a 15-14 lead and the Colonials won the match on a attack error by Llovet that sailed out of bounds.
GW dominated the match on paper with 63 kills to 38 for the visitors. As a team, GW hit .247 compared to .155 for UMass and also managed to out-dig the Minutewomen, 65-48.
GW (11-3, 3-1 A-10) hosts Rhode Island (1-11, 0-4) Saturday at Smith Center in a 7:00 p.m. match while UMass (4-9, 1-3) plays at Fordham Sunday afternoon in the Bronx.
