WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 16) - GW pushed American to the limit but could not get past the host Eagles as they fell, 15-12, 16-14, 15-12, Saturday morning in the American Volleyball Classic at AUs Bender Arena in Northwest Washington.
It was just the second loss of the season for the Colonials (7-2) who began the season by winning five straight matches in three-game sweeps under first-year interim coach Jojit Coronel.
Despite the sweep, GW played the Eagles evenly and had a 12-5 lead in game three before American scored 10 unanswered points to capture the match. GW had no answer for AU outside hitter Ajola Berisha. Berisha put down 17 kills in 39 swings while committing just one error for a .410 hitting percentage.
GW senior outside hitter Tracee Brown had a strong match with 16 kills while senior Suzana Manole double-doubled with 13 kills and a 11 digs. Renee Arnold matched Manole with 11 digs.
Colonials setter Jill Levey hit .500 with three kills in six attacks and had 41 assists.
Sophomore Abby Ernst hit .353 with nine kills and combined with Julie Jahnke to block three Eagle attacks.
GW faces Purdue (8-3) at 5:00 p.m. Saturday in the American Classic. The Boilermakers lost to American Friday and were upset NC State, 3-1, earlier Saturday. AU (9-1) faces NC State (5-5) in the final match of the tournament at 7:00 p.m.
