Colonials Open season 2-0, Will Host Robert Morris, Manhattan September 2 in Chesapeake Invitational
WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 1) - GW got a match-high 11 kills from senior Tracee Brown and seven kills from Julie Jahnke as the Colonials overwhelmed Howard, 15-1, 15-4, 15-5 September 1 at GW's Smith Center. The Colonials defeated Wagner College earlier in the day by the scores, 15-2, 15-3, 15-1. The matches were part of the Chesapeake Volleyball Invitational co-hosted by GW and the U.S. Naval Academy. It also marked the Colonials' first official matches since the untimely death of GW coach Yvette Moorehead August 16.
As a team, the Colonials hit .373 with 37 kills in 75 attacks while committing just nine errors in the 59-minute victory over Howard. Tinisha Mott and Khalilah Birdsong had three kills each to lead the Bison (0-1). GW dominated every facet of the game with 10 service aces and 11 block assists while out-digging the Bison, 41-26.
Wagner (0-1) was led by Natosha Davis's four kills and five digs. The Seahawks managed 14 kills but negated their attack percentage with 14 hitting errors in 68 swings for a .000 team percentge. The Colonials hit .469 as a team in a match that also took 59 minutes to complete.
Starting setter Jill Levey contributed 31 of GW's 39 assists against Wagner.
GW freshmen Lauren Dunning, Ruth Lazzari, Sarah Hokom and Lindsay Ochs all made their collegiate volleyball debut Friday. Lazzari posted a .438 hitting percentage against the Seahawks with eight kills in 16 attempts while commiting just one error. Dunning recorded 17 assists while spelling Levey at setter in the Howard match.
GW (2-0) hosts Robert Morris Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Smith Center followed by a 6:00 p.m. match against Manhattan.
