ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. (FEB. 13) - Elisa Aguilar scored 20 points to lead George Washington past St. Bonaventure, 85-44, in an Atlantic 10 matchup at the Reilly Center. The Colonials have won 18 of their last 19 games while the Bonnies have lost six straight.
George Washington jumped out to a 17-2 lead to start the game, holding St. Bonaventure without a field goal until freshman Courtney Mattingly's layup with 12:52 remaining in the first half. Aguilar had seven points in the game-opening run. The Colonials ended the half with a 12-2 run to take a 49-22 halftime lead.
The Colonials limited the Bonnies to 28 percent shooting from the field (16-57) for the game and forced 30 St. Bonaventure turnovers.
"You have to credit GW for taking us out of the game," said St. Bonaventure coach Marti Whitmore. "Their defense is swarming and it is hard to execute a play when you're just thinking about keeping the ball. Against a great team, we needed a A+ effort from everyone. We just didn't get that."
George Washington, which received votes in this week's Top 25 polls, reached the 20-win mark at 20-3 and improved to 11-1 in Atlantic 10 play. St. Bonaventure fell to 8-15 overall and 4-8 in the A-10.
Sophomore center Angela Scott led St. Bonaventure with 16 points. St. Bonaventure junior forward Melissa Fazio, the leading scorer in the Atlantic 10 (16.6 ppg), returned after missing five game with mononucleosis. She had 14 points but was just 5-for-13 from the field. Mattingly had five points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Nine players scored for George Washington led by Aguilar. Starr Jefferson had 14 points, Petra Dubovcova had 13 and Cathy Joens 11. The Colonials outrebounded the Bonnies 49-38 led by Joens' seven.
