Monroe, Smith Combine For 49 in Preseason Opener
WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 8, 2000) - GW sophomore Chris Monroe scored 27 points with five steals while junior Jaason Smith added 22 points on 10-of-13 FGs with eight rebounds as the Colonials breezed to a 120-78 preseason exhibition blowout over the California East All-Stars Thursday night at Smith Center.
Monroe scored 17 first-half points, including 10-12 from the line, and sophomore SirValiant Brown scored 12 in leading GW to a 60-38 lead at the half.
Freshman Darnell Miller (Bronx, NY/St. Raymond's) had 10 assists in 14 minutes and three steals. Fellow freshman Marquin Chandler (Oakland, CA/Newark Memorial) converted five of nine from the field for 13 points with three rebounds. GW's other freshman, Greg Collucci (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Cardinal Newman) hit a three-pointer and grabbed four rebounds in eight minutes.
The All-Stars scored the game's first four points but it was all GW from there as the Colonials responded with eight unanswered points for an 8-4 lead and quickly built that into a 17-point advantage at the 11:29 mark of the first half.
GW never relinquished the lead after that and punctuated the victory on a layup by Albert Roma that fell as time expired for the final margin.
The Colonials combined to shoot 51 percent (45-89) from the field with 50 rebounds and 14 steals. GW also was sharp at the line shooting 23-27 (.852) from the stripe.
GW (0-0, 0-0 A-10) hosts its second and final exhibition game of the preseason on Monday, Nov. 13 when they take on the One World All-Stars at 7:30 p.m. at Smith Center. GW opens the regular season Saturday, Nov. 18 at home against Texas A&M at 7:30 p.m.
