Jahnke Leads Colonials' Block Party with 11 Block Assists
WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 3) - GW senior Julie Jahnke tied the school record for block assists in a four-game match with 11 as the Colonials combined to block 37 attacks and defeat visiting Xavier, 11-15, 15-7, 15-8, 15-9 Friday night at GW's Smith Center. The victory moved the Colonials into first place in the Conference standings with a 11-2 record.
Senior Tracee Brown led the Colonials attack with 21 kills, one of four Colonials with double-figure kills. It was Jahnke, however, who had the best all-around game Friday. The senior from Denver, CO, put down 17 kills in 29 swings with just one error for a .552 hitting percentage to go with the record-tying blocking performance. Jahnke's effort tied the six-year-old mark set by Anna Krimmel on Oct. 8, 1994, at George Mason. Jahnke is GW's all-time leader in block assists with 446.
Senior Suzana Manole, who broke a GW record with 41 digs in GW's victory over Xavier on Oct. 7, added a match-high 21 digs Friday to go with 18 kills, seven block assists and a block solo.
After the Musketeers drew first blood by winning game one handily, GW roared back to take control of the match with three commanding victories. In the decisive fourth game, Xavier took control early with a 6-3 lead that expanded to a 9-5 advantage before the Colonials responded with a 10-0 surge to seal the match. With GW leading, 12-9, Jahnke sandwiched a pair of kills around an attack error by Hampton for a 14-9 lead. GW's Renee Arnold sent home the final kill to end the match.
The Colonials are off to their best start since the 1994 season. That year GW had its best season in school history with a 32-4 record, an Atlantic 10 championship, and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Xavier's Sara Bachus and Jill Hampton each had 17 kills to lead the Musketeers (20-7, 12-3 A-10). Hampton added 15 digs.
GW (20-7, 11-2 A-10) hosts Dayton Saturday in a 5:00 p.m. match at Smith Center. GW's six seniors will be honored prior to the match.
