The Colonials dedicated the 2000 season to the memory of late GW coach Yvette Moorehead who was found dead August 16.
Game five was an epic battle in which neither team led by more than two points. GW led 14-12 before successive blocks by Xavier's Sara Bachus and Katey Wygant knotted the score at 14-14. GW took a 15-14 lead on a kill by Brown before the Musketeers rallied with two points. The teams traded points until a kill by Brown put GW ahead, 19-18 and, with the crowd on their feet, Xavier hitter Jill Hampton's attack went long giving the Colonials the title.
The Colonials (25-5, 14-2 A-10) defeated host Dayton in the semifinal round Saturday while Xavier ousted defending champion Temple to advance to Sunday's final at Dayton's Frericks Center.
GW setter Jill Levey was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player with 32 digs and 58 assists to go with eight kills in 19 attempts for a .368 percentage.
Senior Tracee Brown was named to the All-Tournament team after she double-doubled with a match-high 25 kills and had 21 digs to lead the Colonials who broke the school record for most digs in a five-game match with 126. Senior Suzana Manole contributed 27 digs while freshman Ruth Lazzari added 12 kills and 20 digs.
Bachus led the Musketeers (23-8, 13-3 A-10) with 24 kills and had 27 digs while teammate Hampton recorded 18 kills with a team-high 31 digs.
The conference title is GW's first since the 1995 season when they defeated Middle Tennessee State in the NCAA first round before losing at Texas.
