Women's Tennis Sweeps Atlantic 10 Foes

The Colonials first match against Xavier proved to be the hardest of the weekend, as GW survived 5-4. Gencsoy, filling in for sophomore Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton Comprehensive) as GW's number one seed, defeated Emily Senich 6-0, 6-1. First, playing in her regular #2 spot easily defeated Kate Weichtman 6-0, 6-1. Stastny was able was able to defeat Beth Abraham 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the pivotal match enabling the Colonials to earn the win.
Next, the team traveled to Dayton on Saturday October 28 to face the Flyers. This time the Colonials had a much easier time, defeating Dayton 8-1. GW won five of the six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches. Gencsoy, First, Stastny, Lisa Borromeo (Bound Brook, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Jen Sunshine (Vancouver WA/Oregon Episcopal School & Jesuit H.S.) were all easy winners in their singles matches.
To complete the weekend the Colonials traveled to Pittsburgh to face the Dukes of Duquesne on Sunday October 29. GW had a little tougher match against the Dukes, but still dominated the play winning 6-2. Gencsoy and First completed their undefeated weekend by winning their singles matches and teaming up to win their doubles match as well. Sunshine had one of the most entertaining matches of the weekend and, perhaps, the biggest comeback of the season. Trailing 2-6, 0-5 and 15-40 in the deciding game, the sophomore from Vancouver roared back to win 7-5, 6-2 and put an exclamation point on an already successful weekend.
Women's tennis continues their fall season when they travel to William and Mary on Friday, November 3 to participate in the ITA Regionals in Williamsburg this weekend.
