SMITH CENTER, WASHINGTON, DC Senior tri-captain Mike King took control with a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds in the season-opener for both teams. Sophomore Chris Monroe, recovered from his concussion in the Nov. 13 exhibition but still hobbled by the hamstring bruise he suffered in that same collision with teammate Patrick Ngongba, powered his way to 21 points...13 of which came at the free throw line.
Both teams learned quickly that officials are serious about the point-of-emphasis regarding rough play as the refs whistled a total of 54 fouls including a pair of technicals. The new emphasis took its toll on SirValiant Brown who picked up two personals in the games first two minutes and his fourth just four minutes into the second half.
Carlton Brown led the Aggies with 15 points while Bernard King added 14 points and six assists. The Colonials defense pestered A&M into commiting 20 turnovers while GW gave it away just six times. GW broke open a close game in the last four minutes of the first half. With GW leading 39-37 at the 3:53 mark, the Colonials ripped off a 16-5 run for a 55-42 advantage at the break. GW expanded its lead to as much as 23 in the second half and were never seriously threatened down the stretch.
A moment of silence was observed prior to the game in remembrance of the 12 Texas A&M students who died exactly one year ago while making preparations for the traditional bonfire that precedes the Texas football game.
