GW (23-5, 14-2 A-10) started a lineup of six seniors making their final appearances at Smith Center. A-10 Co-Player of the Week Tracee Brown led the Colonials offense with her third consecutive double-double. She recorded a match-high 19 kills and 16 digs while sophomore Abby Ernst had the best offensive match of her career with 12 kills in 21 attacks and no errors for a .571 hitting percentage.
The victory proved costly, however, as GW senior Renee Arnold suffered a sprained knee during the first game of the match and did not return. It was uncertain whether she will be available for the A-10 tournament.
After GW won the first two games decisively, the Colonials started slowly in the game three as Duquesne raced out ot a 4-0 lead. The Colonials battled back to tie the game at 5-5 and forged ahead at 8-6 before a service ace and a kill by Jacqui Gerlach knotted the game at 8-8. The teams were tied again at 11 before consecutive kills by Jill Levey and Julie Jahnke and a Gerlach error ended the match.
Gerlach, Sherene Lemonias and Brooke Saunders each had six kills for the Dukes (15-16, 4-12 A-10) and Gerlach added 14 digs.
GW faces host Dayton Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1:00 pm at Dayton's Frericks Center. Second-seeded Temple will play the No. 3 seed Xavier at 3:30 pm. The championship final takes place Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Saturday's contest was the final home match for GW's six seniors: Renee Arnold, Tracee Brown, Adrianna Gucciardi, Julie Jahnke, Jill Levey and Suzana Manole.
