CINCINNATI, OH (Oct. 7) - GW senior Suzana Manole digs playing Xavier. The outside hitter from Bucharest, Romania, shattered the school record for digs with 41 in a five-game marathon victory over the Musketeers to complete a key A-10 sweep of the Ohio schools Saturday night, October 7, in Cincinnati. Manole's performance eclipsed the previous record of 35 digs in a five-game match held by former Colonial and current Georgetown volleyball coach Liu Li. The Colonials host the Li-led Hoyas Wednesday night at Smith Center.
In defeating the Musketeers, GW extended its winning streak to six straight and improved to 14-3 overall, 6-1 in the league under first-year coach Jojit Coronel. The Colonials, who are dedicating this season to the memory of late coach Yvette Moorehead who passed away August 16, are off to their best start since the 1994 season. That year GW had its best season in school history with a 32-4 record, an Atlantic 10 championship, and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Saturday, GW battled the Musketeers for two hours, 32 minutes to win by the scores, 9-15, 15-11, 15-9, 14-16, 15-12, before a crowd of nearly 500 at Xavier's new Cintas Center.
Senior Tracee Brown again led the Colonials with a team-high 24 kills. She registered five block solos for the second staight match. Five Colonials came up with double figures in digs and totalled 114 for the match to equal the 11-year-old school record for digs in a five-game match. GW also had 114 digs against Maryland in 1989.
Senior middle blocker Julie Jahnke (16 kills , 10 digs, five block assists) was a key figure in the Colonials' victory and stands just six block assists shy of becoming GW's all-time leader in that category. Senior setter Jill Levey added a match-high 60 assists and 21 digs in the winning effort.
Xavier's Sara Bachus led the Musketeers (11-6, 5-2 A-10) with 25 kills while teammate Jill Hampton added 16 kills and 23 digs.
GW (14-3, 6-1 A-10) hosts defending Big East champion Georgetown Wednesday, Oct. 11, in a 7:00 p.m. match at Smith Center.
