Washington, DC (October 10, 2000) - Sophomore Tracy Wei (Marietta, GA/Walton Comprehensive) won in the Group A singles final of the 11th Annual DC Metropolitan Intercollegiate Tennis Championship defeating fellow Colonial Nazli Gencsoy (Istanbul, Turkey/Lyree de Galatasaray) this past weekend. Wei was selected last season as the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer and should compete for the top singles spot on the team.
Freshman newcomer Gencsoy reached the finals by upsetting the number one seed, American University standout Irina Bovina. Bovina, originally from Russia, was ranked 10th for junior girls in her country, and fifth overall in Moscow.
The Colonials dominated the tournament with three of the four semifinalists in the Group A singles matches sporting the buff and blue. The championship featured local players from American, Georgetown, Howard and UMBC. In addition to Wei and Gencsoy, freshman Lindy First (San Diego, CA/La Jolla) made it to the semifinal round. First was defeated by teammate Gencsoy.
GW also performed well in the consolation brackets, winning the Group B singles, and A and B doubles consolation finals. The team of Wei and Gencsoy defeated Georgetown to take the A doubles final, while in the B doubles consolation final, Lisa Borromeo (Bound Brook, NJ/Mt. St. Mary Academy) and Sunlen Miller (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) defeated teammates Ashley Lucia (Lynnfield, MA/Lynnfield) and Carolena Deutch-Garcia (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East).
In the B singles consolation final, the Colonials dominated yet again, with GW earning three of the four semifinal berths. Miller prevailed in the all-Colonial final with a victory over Borromeo.
Women's tennis continues their fall season with when they travel to Towson on Wednesday, October 11.
