WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 25, 1999) -- GW got a match-high 20 kills from senior Gabriela Mojska and 12 kills from junior Julie Jahnke as the Colonials defeated La Salle 3-0 (15-9, 15-5, 15-4) Saturday at Smith Center. The victory salvaged the weekend for the Colonials, who lost a hard-fought 3-1 decision to defending A-10 champion Temple Friday night (15-9, 6-15, 15-11, 15-9).
GW suffered its first Atlantic 10 loss Friday despite outhitting the Owls .191 to .158. Temple's serving was the difference in the match as the Owls served up 12 aces, including four by Enkeleida Shkoza, compared to just two aces for the Colonials. GW continued to prove itself as one of the best blocking teams in the league as they combined for 28 block assists led by Jahnke's eight and six by A-10 Player of the Week, Tracee Brown. Temple, led by Alma Kovaci's 17 kills and 17 digs, improved to 6-3, 1-0 in the A-10.
Against the Explorers Saturday, Mojska and Jahnke were the "go-to" players on offense. Mojska hit .378 with 20 kills in 37 swings. Jahnke was nearly perfect as she hit .786 with 12 kills in 14 attempts while committing just one error. As a team, GW hit better than .333 in two of the three games and a respectable .286 in game two.
La Salle (9-5, 0-2 A-10) coming off a five-game loss at Virginia Tech the night before, was led by Melissa Hodge's 11 kills.
GW (8-4, 3-1 A-10) plays at Virginia Tech Friday at 7:00 p.m. in its only match of the week.
