WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 28, 1999) -- Point guard Bernard Barrow (Harlem, NY/Kilgore (TX) JC) has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend The George Washington University, head basketball coach Tom Penders has announced. Barrow, who will have two years of eligibility at GW, joins incoming freshmen Val Brown and Chris Monroe who signed last November.
The 5-8 Barrow averaged 8.7 points, 3.4 steals and a league-leading 8.9 assists per game last season for Kilgore College in Kilgore, TX. He helped lead the Rangers to a two-year combined record of 54-11 (.831) under coach Scott Schumacher. Barrow was named both All-Region and All-Conference by the coaches in the Texas Eastern Conference during his two seasons at Kilgore. Schumacher said Barrow has all the qualities you could want in a point guard. "He's right up there with a handful of guys," Schumacher said. "Desire within the player is something you cannot coach. When you get players with the desire to succeed like Bernard has, those are special-type players."
Penders, now in his 29th season as a head coach, calls Barrow "an extremely quick, physically strong player who is a leader both on and off the floor. I've been watching Bernard since he was a freshman in high school. He is a pure point guard who can score and distribute the ball. He is a real jet, a real New York City point guard who knows how to play the game. The combination of Val [Brown] and Bernard should ease the loss of Shawnta [Rogers]."
GW (20-9, 13-3 A-10) won the 1998-99 Atlantic 10 Conference West Division title and received an at-large bid to the ^99 NCAA Tournament.
