GW Sweeps Johns Hopkins 9-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 17, 1999) -- George Washington swept Johns Hopkins 9-0 yesterday at Hilton Head to record their second victory of the season and end a seven-game losing streak. GW improved to 2-7 in dual-match play for the season.
Sarine Weingarten defeated Lauren Cherande, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles in the most closely contested match of the day. Weingarten improved to 4-5 for the season with the win. Ghada Skaff recorded her first singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-1, victory over Meaghan Delaney in the No. 2 singles match.
Holly Huntley lost only one game in the No. 3 singles match as she defeated Sarah Zelewski, 6-0, 6-1. Huntley inproved to 3-6 in singles play with the victory. Katarina Stastny blanked Esther Vorurich, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 4 singles match. Stastny also improved to 3-6 in singles action with the win.
Megan Goldsmith recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Vana Murugiah in the No. 5 singles match. Goldsmith improved to 2-7 for the season. Laurel Lebby won her first singles match in three attempts with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Barbara Zwecker in the No. 6 singles match.
GW lost just four games in the three doubles matches. Huntley and Stastny paired for an 8-2 No. 1 doubles victory over Cherande and Delaney. The powerful doubles team inproved to 2-1 in dual-match play, and are 6-2 for the year including tournament action.
Weingarten and Skaff paired for an 8-1 win over Zalewski and Vorurich in the No. 2 doubles match. Skaff and Weingarten are 1-2 for the season. Gold smith and Ashley Lucia paired for an 8-1 win over Murugiah and Coogan in the No. 3 doubles match. The victory was the first of the season for Goldsmith and Lucia in five matches.
GW returns to action during their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head with a match against Nebraska on Thursday, March 18.
