Colonials Stay in Hunt for A-10 Tournament
WASHINGTON, DC (November 5, 1999) - GW got a match-high 23 kills from senior Gabriela Mojska and 19 kills from junior Renee Arnold as the Colonials outlasted Virginia Tech in a five-game thriller Friday night at GW's Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 6-15, 13-15, 15-13, 15-8, 16-14.
After losing the first two games, GW reeled off three straight victories to capture the match in dramatic fashion. In the decisive fifth game, got out to a 5-1 lead before the Hokies battled back to within two at 10-8. GW maintained a tenuous three-point cushion before Tech tied the game at 14-14. The Colonials got a clutch kill from Arnold to go up 15-14 and the match ended when GW's Julie Jahnke and Suzana Manole combined to block an attack by Tech's Kristin Wright.
Virginia Tech (8-16, 7-7 A-10) was led by Rachel Julian's 16 kills (17 digs) and Holly Disser's 19 digs with 14 kills. The Hokies got strong serving performances throughout the match as they totaled 15 service aces led by Rachel Julian's four aces and three each by Disser, Wright and Renee Collins.
Playing without injured starting setter Jill Levey, Manole amassed 51 of GW's 54 assists on the evening. The Colonials hit .174 as a team compared to .076 for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech will host Xavier Friday, Nov. 12 followed by Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Blacksburg, VA.
GW (14-8, 9-5 A-10) hosts Dayton Nov. 12 and Xavier Nov. 13 in its final home matches of the season.
