PHILADELPHIA, PA (Nov. 26) - GW saw its 1999 season end Friday afternoon in Philadelphia with a 3-15, 8-15, 15-9, 12-15 loss at top-seeded Temple in the first semifinal round of the 1999 Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10 Tournament. No. 2 seed Rhode Island defeated third-seeded Xavier 15-12, 15-11, 15-7 in the other semifinal to set up the Temple-Rhode Island final Saturday with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Colonials, playing their last seven matches without starting setter Jill Levey, were making their first appearance in the A-10 Tournament since the 1995 season. Senior Gabriela Mojska's team-high 18 kills and 11 digs led GW.
Temple's Enkeleida Shkoza was too much for the Colonials hitting .606 with 23 kills and four block assists while A-10 Player of the Year, Alma Kovaci and Maria Vutskova each recorded 15 kills as the Owls combined to hit .317 as a team.
By comparison, GW hit .190 as a team but out-blocked Temple at the net, 9-7, and came up with five more digs on the afternoon. Both teams served five aces with Temple committing twice as many service errors than the Colonials (16-8).
The loss was GW's third to the defending A-10 Tournament champion Owls this season after dropping a 3-1 match to Temple on Sept. 24 at Smith Center and a 3- 0 sweep at Temple Oct. 30.
Temple improved to 24-5 on the season while GW fell to 16-11 with an 11-7 mark in the league.
