WASHINGTON, DC (November 13) It wasn't the type of senior farewell GW was hoping for as the Colonials fell in three games (3-15, 10-15, 10-15) to visiting Xavier at Smith Center Saturday night.
GW's two seniors, Gabriela Mojska and Theresa Ridder, made their final Smith Center appearances as member of the GW volleyball team and were honored in a pre-match ceremony. The Musketeers, however, were coming off a stinging 3-0 sweep at the hands of Virginia Tech the previous night and unceremoniously dispatched the Colonials.
Mojska again led GW with 16 kills but committed nine attack errors in 48 attempts for a paltry .148 hitting percentage. The Colonials followed suit hitting just .054 as a team compared to Xavier's .282 percentage. Mojska added a team-high 10 digs and a pair of service aces. Ridder contributed four digs in her final home appearance.
The Colonials were out-blocked at the net for one of the few times this season as Xavier combined to block 12 GW attacks while the Colonials managed to block nine Musketeer attacks.
After Xavier controlled the tempo in game one, GW showed signs of life in games two and three before the Musketeers pulled away at the end of each game.
Xavier (22-7, 12-5 A-10) was led by Jenny Janszen's 15 kills (eight block assists) and Beth Osterday's 17 digs. GW junior Tracee Brown led the Colonials with a .308 hitting percentage on six kills with just two errors.
GW (15-9, 10-6 A-10) finishes the regular season on the road against Rhode Island Nov. 19 and at Massachusetts Nov. 20. The Colonials entered the day tied with Rhode Island in the conference standings and need at least a split to ensure a berth in the Atlantic 10 Tournament Nov. 26-27. Only the top four teams in the league advance to the championship tournament.
