Colonials Stay in Hunt for A-10 Tournament
WASHINGTON, DC (November 12) - GW got a career-high 25 kills from junior Renee Arnold and 23 kills from senior Gabriela Mojska to lift the Colonials over visiting Dayton Friday night at GW's Smith Center. The Colonials won by the scores, 15-8, 15-6, 4-15, 15-13 in a two-hour, eight-minute match.
After GW won the first two games convincingly, it was the Flyers who dominated game three, 15-4, hitting .375 as a team compared to just .109 for the Colonials.
In the decisive fourth game, Dayton took a 4-1 lead and a 7-3 advantage before the Colonials battled back to tie the score at 9-9 on one of Tracee Brown's 10 kills. GW upped its lead to 11-9 before the Flyers managed to tie the game at 12-12 on a kill by Katie Ferriell. Following a kill by GW's Tracee Brown and an attack error by Dayton's Sierra Ashley to give the Colonials a 14-13 advantage, GW closed the out the match on a kill by Arnold.
Statistically, the teams couldn't have played more evenly. Both squads had 74 kills and 73 digs. GW outhit the Flyers, .230 to .220 while committing 29 attack errors, one fewer than Dayton's 30. GW also served five aces to four for the visitors.
Dayton (13-12, 9-7 A-10) was led by Ashley's 20 kills (13 digs) and Susan Westbrock's 15 kills. Xinxin Zhang added 16 digs for the Flyers.
Playing without injured starting setter Jill Levey, junior Suzana Manole amassed 59 of GW's 68 assists on the evening and contributed a match-high 17 digs.
Dayton travels to Virginia Tech Saturday.
GW (15-8, 10-5 A-10) hosts Xavier Saturday in its final home match of the season. The Musketeers are coming off a 3-0 loss at Virginia Tech Friday in Blacksburg, VA.
