Volleyball Streak Ends at Temple Saturday

PHILADELPHIA, PA (Oct. 30)-- GW saw its four-match, 12-game winning streak end Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia with a 15-8, 16-14, 15-12 loss at Temple. The Colonials, playing without starting setter Jill Levey, hit .259 as a team with 19.5 blocks compared to .232 and 8.5 blocks for Temple.
The Owls used tough serving and 38 kills from Alma Kovaci to overpower GW all afternoon. Six different Owls combined to serve 10 aces, led by Maria Vutskova's four, and Temple dug more than half of GW's attacks with 80 digs on 135 Colonial attempts. The 38 kills was the most by a GW opponent this season.
GW got a team-high 13 kills from Gabriela Mojska, 12 kills from Renee Arnold and a flawless hitting performance from Tracee Brown who had 11 kills with no errors in 23 swings for a .478 percentage.
Freshman Abby Ernst had the best game of her young career with three assists, a block solo and a team-high seven block assists in the losing effort.
The loss was GW's second to the defending A-10 Tournament champion Owls this season after dropping a 3-1 match to Temple on Sept. 24 at Smith Center. Temple (16- 4) sits atop the league standings at 10-1 in the A-10.
GW (13-8, 8-5 A-10) returns to Smith Center to host Virginia Tech Friday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in its only match of the week. The Hokies defeated GW, 3-1 on Oct. 1 at Blacksburg, VA.
