GW Opens Season With 5-2 Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 15, 1998) -- The George Washington University women's tennis team opened the 1998-99 season with a 5-2 dual-match victory at Towson yesterday. The Colonials won four of six singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match to give first-year head coach Jeanne Gengler a victory in her first match as head coach.
Junior Ghada Skaff fell 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match to Towson's Dana Lewis. Junior Sarine Weingarten dominated Towson's Stephanie Knouse for a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2. Senior Holly Huntley defeated Towson's Megan Scott 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. Freshman Katarina Stastny won a hard-fought duel over Towson's Terry Dumansly 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 match. Senior Paige Novak picked up an easy 6-0, 6-2 victory over Towson's Eleanor Brooks at No. 5. Freshman Megan Goldsmith took Towson's Jill Rostonsky to three sets before falling 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 6 match. In an exhibition singles match, freshman Lisa Borromeo defeated Towson's Betsy Chew 6-2, 6-0.
In the No. 1 doubles match, Huntley and Weingarten blanked Lewis and Scott 8-0. Skaff and Stastny gave Towson's Knouse and Dumansley a fight in the No. 2 doubles match, but fell 8-6.
