Tyler Kavanaugh is entering his fifth season with the GW baseball staff and second as the team's Associate Head Coach.
Coach Kavanaugh helped lead the 2024 Revolutionaries back in the A-10 postseason for the first time since 2018. While serving as recruiting coordinator, Kavanaugh has been instrumental in rebuilding the post COVID roster. Kavanaugh’s pitching staff posted the most strikeouts the program has seen in the past 10 seasons and were the only pitching staff in A10 with fewer hits surrendered than innings pitched. GW hurlers led the Atlantic 10 conference in saves, posted the lowest opponent batting average and finished top three combined ERA. Three members of the pitching staff (Teddy Brennan, Graham Jeffries, and Michael Foltz) were honored with A-10 Pitcher of the Week honors throughout the season. Foltz was selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team as well as the conference's All-Tournament team for his dominant performance to eliminate three-seed Dayton in a complete game effort.
Â
Under Kavanaugh's tutelage, Foltz enjoyed a career year, leading the conference in ERA, opponent batting average, allowing the fewest hits surrendered and least runs allowed. Another Revolutionary, Teddy Brennan, was recognized on May 10th on D1Baseball.com’s TOP 150 Starting Pitcher list.  There was no better example of Kavanaugh’s ability to develop than Brandon Siegenthaler’s 2024 season. The graduate transfer (Villanova ‘23) came to Foggy Bottom with a career 3-7 record, 6.78 ERA, and .328 opponent batting average. The right-hander was a stalwart in the GW Rev’s pen, winning six games, saving another six and boasting a .212 opponent batting average. Siegenthaler also finished with a 3.33 ERA while wearing the Buff and Blue.
2023 saw the emergence of Chris Kahler as one of the A-10’s top hurlers. Kahler won Player of the Week twice, ranked in the top 10 of several pitching categories, and was awarded All-Conference honors. 2022 All-Conference performer Logan Koester also had a career year leading the A-10 in innings pitched and was tied for most A-10 wins. The Buff and Blue pitching staff finished with the fourth-best ERA in A-10 play and won Pitcher of the Week honors three times.Â
Kavanugh also assumed catching coach duties for 2023. The Buff and Blue backstops saw a 70% reduction in passed balls, having the fewest in the A-10. In A-10 games, GW catchers led the way with most runners caught stealing.Â
On the recruiting front, Kavanaugh’s 2023 class ranked in the top 100 by Perfect Game and featured 12 high school players from six states.Â
In his first season in Foggy Bottom, Kavanaugh helped coach the Colonial pitching staff to the 3rd lowest ERA in the A-10, and GW's pitchers also allowed the 3rd fewest hits and 4th fewest walks. The 4.87 ERA in league play was lowest since the program has posted since 2018. Kavanugh also mentored two all conference pitchers: Harrison Cohen (Second Team) and Logan Koester (Rookie). Cohen enjoyed his best season in Buff and Blue-leading the conference in A10 strikeouts with 58 and finishing 3rd overall with 93 total punch outs, and was signed by the New York Yankees in August 2022.Â
Since 2019, five pitchers have signed professional contracts under Kavanaugh's tutelage. In addition to Cohen, Trevor Kuncl also enjoyed a career year under Kavanaugh, and signed a professional contract with the Lake Erie Crushers.Â
In years prior, Kavanaugh helped lead the pitching staff to the second-best ERA in the conference in 2020 and the third-best in 2019 en route to a conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. Under his leadership, six different hurlers have earned All-Conference accolades.
Prior to his time with Stony Brook, Kavanaugh spent two years at Hofstra where he mentored four All-CAA performers. Before that, he spent two years at Marist College, coaching four All-MAAC honorees. Kavanaugh also spent two years at Sacred Heart University as the recruiting coordinator for a program that advanced to the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Tournaments.
Kavanaugh began his coaching career at SUNY Purchase in 2007 and after two years moved on to DeSales University for a pair of seasons, winning the conference championship in 2010.
A 2006 graduate of Kenyon College, Kavanaugh was a four-year starting catcher and three-time All-Conference honoree during his playing days. He helped lead Kenyon to a school record for wins and the program's first-ever conference tournament appearance during his senior year.
