Annika Sawyer joined GW Athletics in July of 2025 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and currently oversees the Gymnastics program. She came to GW from Major League Rugby’s Houston SaberCats, where she served as an Athletic Training Intern. Sawyer earned her Master’s Degree in Athletic Training from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in 2025, developing a broad clinical background along the way.
Her experience spans from high school athletics, as well as NCAA Division I, II, and III programs, including Georgetown University (Men’s and Women’s Basketball), Lubbock Christian University (Soccer, Track & Field), and the University of Texas at Dallas (Volleyball, Men’s Basketball, Soccer). Outside of traditional athletic settings, she completed clinical rotations at Covenant’s Orthopedic Trauma Clinic and Lubbock Sports Rehab, an outpatient physical therapy and athletic training facility.
Sawyer earned her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University in 2020, where she was involved in Student Bonfire, Aggies for Limbs, and presented research at the Able, Active, and Adaptive Conference. She holds certifications in Mental Health First Aid, QPR Suicide Prevention, the Graston Technique, ICIR (Immediate Care in Rugby) through World Rugby, and Lower Quarter Dry Needling. As a well-rounded clinician, she prioritizes holistic care for her athletes and is committed to providing comprehensive support.
Her long-term goals include working the Olympics and Paralympics, earning her Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential, and pursuing a Doctor of Science (ScD) degree after gaining a few years of experience in the field. A Texas native launching her career in the nation’s capital, Sawyer brings her passion, drive, and her dog Apollo to Washington, D.C., ready to make an impact.
