Tom Hawkins is in his first season as head coach of the men's tennis team at GW. Hawkins comes to GW with over 30 years of professional experience in tennis. He is the Director of Tennis at Worldgate Sport & Health Club in Herndon, VA, and at Regency Sport and Health Club in McLean, VA, where he has worked since 1980. He served as the Director of Tennis and Manager of Rod Laver Tennis at Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island, SC. He also coached the McLean High School boy's and girl's tennis teams from 1995-98. As a player, Hawkins was ranked No. 9 in Men's Doubles in the U.S. Tennis Association Mid-Atlantic region rankings, and No. 6 in Men's 35's singles. Hawkins received a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History, from Rollins College in 1973. He is certified as a P-1 professional by the United States Professional Tennis Association, and is the President and a member of the Board of Directors of the USPTA Mid-Atlantic Division. Hawkins was named the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Professional of the Year by the USPTA in 1994 and 1996. In the U.S. Tennis Association, Hawkins is the Mid-Atlantic coach for the 12's and 14's under Zonal team for USTA National Team Events, and has been the Mid-Atlantic Coach for the 16-and-under intersectional team for the USTA 16's National Team Championship. Beginning in 1992, Hawkins was named Head Coach and Administrator for the Northern Virginia-Washington, D.C. USTA Area Training Center, working with sectionally and nationally ranked juniors in the metro area. |
