GW softball finished Saturday's home- and conference-opening doubleheader with a 1-1 record vs. Saint Louis, falling 6-4 in game one before shutting down the Billikens in game two, 6-0. The Revolutionaries and Billikens return to the GW Softball Field tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. to decide the series.
The long ball played a big factor in game one as seven of the 10 combined runs were scored via home runs. Both of GW's homers came in the second inning as Isabella Ruby hit a solo shot for her first career home run, and Ashley Corpuz launched her third of the season, a two-run shot to put GW ahead 4-0 early.Â
SLU tied the game in the third inning as Karsen Jany and Abby Mallo each hit two-run home runs. The game remained tied until the seventh, when Mallo hit a two-RBI single to give Saint Louis the lead.
Cece Smith went the distance for GW in the circle and struck out a season-high nine batters. She was only tagged with two earned runs, as both homers in the third came unearned. Smith also had a quality game offensively, finishing 3-3 at the plate with one run scored. Corpuz was 1-1 in game one with a home run and three walks.Â
In game two, GW captured momentum early as Corpuz crushed her second home run of the day to lead off the bottom of the first. GW doubled its lead quickly in the first on an RBI groundout via Katie Hendrickson, before taking advantage of defensive miscues to score in the third and fourth inning and go up 4-0.Â
GW scored in every inning except the second as the Revolutionaries offense steadily built a lead throughout the game. Daniella Lew collected her first RBI of the season on a single in the sixth to make it 5-0, before Emi Todoroki delivered the game's final run on a single to left-center in the sixth inning.Â
Sophia Torreso was excellent for GW in the circle for all of game two, giving up just three hits in her first complete-game shutout of 2026. Torreso moved to 3-1 on the season as she improved her season-long ERA to 3.40.Â
Game three between GW and SLU is set for tomorrow at 12:00 p.m., and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
