WASHINGTON - In front of its home fans in a packed house on the Vern, the George Washington University softball team secured a 2-1 win over Saint Joseph's to win the first game of the 2025 A-10 Championship. GW beat a Saint Joseph's team that it was swept by in the regular season, downing the Hawks today when it mattered most.
The Revolutionaries did not disappoint in their return to the postseason for the first time since 2022. The Buff & Blue got the job done with just two runs in the game, but with stellar pitching from starter Chloe Greene, and relievers Cece Smith and Anna Reed.
GW went ahead first with a score in the bottom of the second, cashing in with a runner on third on an Allison Heffley fielder's choice. The Hawks, however, turned around and leveled the score right away with a solo home run in the third.
The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 until the fifth, when GW retook the lead with the eventual game-winner as Madi Mays, who is second in RBI this season for GW, sent a single to right that brought in Cadence Gilliland from second.
Smith earned the win with four punchouts as GW's middle-relief pitcher. Reed closed the game and earned her first career save in the Buff & Blue.
GW outhit Saint Joseph, 6-5, in an error-free contest from both teams.
The Revolutionaries return tomorrow for their second game of the A-10 Championship, with first pitch tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. on ESPN+. A GW win tomorrow would advance the Revolutionaries to Friday's third round with a trip to the A-10 Championship finals on the line against the winner of No. 2 Saint Louis vs. No.3 Fordham. A GW loss tomorrow would mean the Revolutionaries play again at 5:00 p.m. in an elimination-game rematch against No. 5 Saint Joseph's.
