WASHINGTON - The GW softball team was defeated twice on Thursday to end its run at the A-10 Championship. No. 4 GW opened the day with a 2-0, nail-biting loss to No. 1 Dayton, before being overtaken late by No. 5 Saint Joseph's to lose the nightcap, 6-1.
No. 4 GW 0, No. 1 Dayton 2
GW took top-seeded Dayton all the way down to the wire, loading the bases in the seventh inning, but the Flyers escaped with the 2-0 win to avoid losing its sixth-consecutive game to GW.
GW vs. Dayton showcased the 2025 A-10 Pitcher of the Year, GW's Anna Reed, against the 2024 A-10 Pitcher of the Year, Dayton's Izzy Kemp, and both pitchers lived well up to their titles.
Reed threw five quality innings, with her only blemish coming on Chloe Wong's two-run homer in the fourth. Reed allowed just three hits and struck out four Flyers.
The big number in the box score though was Kemp's 17 strikeouts, as she brought her best stuff to the Vern to shut down GW's usually high-powered attack. Kemp held GW hitless and with just one baserunner until the first batter of the seventh inning.
The drama peaked in the seventh when GW got to Kemp and loaded the bases by way of a Cadence Gilliland inning-opening single, a hit-by-pitch for Madi Mays and a walk drawn by Emi Todoroki.
The Revolutionaries then nearly had the moment they were looking for when Carolyn Skotz drove a ball down the right-field line, but it went just foul and the game ended by way of a GW popout followed by a groundout.
The Buff & Blue didn't leave the game without a record, as Reed's second strikeout of the game broke the GW single-season team strikeout record with the team's 314th strikeout of the 2025 season, passing the previous record (313) set in 2019.
GW was outhit by the Flyers, 4-1. Only six total runners were left stranded (four for GW, two for Dayton) as the pitchers had their way for the majority of the game.
No. 4 GW 1, No. 5 Saint Joseph's 6
Facing elimination, the Revolutionaries battled Saint Joseph's for the second time in the tournament after beating the Hawks, 2-1, in the first round. GW's offense started fast and produced opportunities, but the Revolutionaries only managed to score once and faced a late surge by Saint Joseph's, which eventually eliminated GW with a 6-1 loss.
The Revolutionaries came out swinging, loading the bases in the first inning and cashing in on the opportunity with a Madi Mays' RBI single. GW loaded the bases again in the second but wasn't able to take advantage. The Revolutionaries had runners aboard in every inning after that and came close to scoring on multiple occasions, including a close play at the plate with Gilliland barreling home from second, but GW was never able to add on.
The Hawks got three runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, and they another three in the seventh to build a five-run edge for the bottom of the seventh.
GW drew five walks. Gilliland reached base in all four of her at-bats (3-3, BB). Todoroki had two hits.
