Four-run fifth boosts Revolutionaries over Rams
WASHINGTON - GW softball won the first game of its series against Fordham, 6-2, in a battle between two of the A-10's best at the GW Softball Field on Saturday. With the win, the Revolutionaries improved to 25-14 overall, including 14-2 at home and 10-5 in the A-10.Â
The Revolutionaries had lost seven-straight games to the Bronx-based Rams, who came into the matchup in first place in the conference. Both teams came out strong with solo home runs in the first inning, but the Revolutionaries' stamina and depth proved too much for Fordham in game one.
After Fordham's Sydney Wells (8th of the season) and GW's Ashley Corpuz (14th of the season) matched solo home runs in the first, the Rams notched their second run of the game in the top of the second to go up 2-1. Fordham held the lead until the fourth, when GW's Carolyn Skotz tied the game on a scorched double down the left-field line that scored the runner from second.
GW took the lead and pulled away with four runs in the fifth, which started with three-straight hits from the top of the order. Allison Heffley led off with a double, then Ashley Corpuz singled and stole second before both scored on Kaylee Layfield's single through the right side. Two at-bats later, Madi Mays blasted her second home run of the year to extend the lead to 6-2.
Cece Smith earned the win with an excellent outing in relief of GW starter Anna Reed. Reed was replaced after going 3.0 with two runs (one earned) given up before Smith locked down the final 4.0, over which she allowed just two hits with six strikeouts.
GW outhit Fordham, 9-6, in a game that saw each of GW's top seven batters in the order collect at least one hit.
GW and Fordham return to the GW Softball Field tomorrow for the second and third games of the series. First pitch for game one of tomorrow's doubleheader is at 12:00 p.m., and both games will air on ESPN+.
