GW gymnastics finishes championship weekend in style with a collection of six major awards from the EAGL: Gymnast of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, Assistant Coaches of the Year and Sport Administrator of the Year.
Delaney DeHaan has earned Gymnast of the Year after a stellar sophomore season competing in the all-around for GW, and finished the year ranked as the top all-around gymnast in the conference and 43rd in the nation. In DeHaan's first season competing vault and floor at the collegiate level, she finished with First Team All-EAGL accolades on both events, and led the conference in the vault, while sitting second on floor. She also collected First Team All-Conference honors on beam and in the all-around, while finishing on the Second Team on bars. DeHaan is the fourth GW gymnast in program history to be honored as Gymnast of the Year.
Lola Montevago was tabbed as the EAGL's Rookie of the Year after a breakout first season in the Buff & Blue. Montevago finished her rookie campaign ranked 2nd on bars and 3rd on beam in the conference, inclusive of a program record-setting 9.975 performance on the bars in February, breaking the previous record set in 1998. Montevago served as a mainstay in the bars and beam lineups all season, earning a score of 9.850 five times on the beam and scores of 9.900 or higher on the bars four times over the course of the regular season.
Co-Captain grad student Kendall Whitman has been honored as the EAGL's Senior Gymnast of the Year for the second-consecutive season following a stellar showing on the vault, beam and floor. Whitman finished the regular season ranked as the top gymnast on floor, seventh on the beam and 10th on the vault. Whitman competes with a floor routine with three E-level passes and competes on the vault in a move named after her. As a two-time team captain for the Buff & Blue, Whitman is already a three-time NCAA regional qualifier.
Stephanie Worrell earned EAGL Coach of the Year in her first season as the Head Coach of the program and tenth season with GW. Worrell's leadership incorporated the strong foundation of the program while bringing her own creativity and ideas to lead the team. As the lead beam and floor coach, Worrell led her units to be ranked second on beam and first on floor within the league, all while equipping multiple student-athletes with competition-ready routines. Her coaching style can be seen in the variety of skills showcased throughout these events, in addition to the multiple scholastic and athletic accolades collected by the team this season.
In their first seasons with GW gymnastics, Sunny Marchand and India Anderson have been recognized as EAGL Assistant Coaches of the Year. In just seven months, Marchand prepared the vault unit to rank first in the conference and incorporated four different vaults into the starting lineup. On bars, Anderson has guided the unit to rank second on bars, and has built both depth and consistency within the event's starting lineup. The GW Revs bars lineup displays five unique major releases, again displaying the variety and strength within the coaching staff.
As Sport Administrator of the Year, Chris Hennelly has served GW for 30 years as a fierce advocate for all student-athletes. He leads the athletic training room, strength and conditioning department and mental health programs. Hennelly's unwavering support for the gymnastics team is unmatched, and he has prioritized and supported the student-athletes and coaches through in-person interactions and resources.Â
