COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The George Washington University softball team was defeated by both Princeton (10-5) and Texas State (6-1) on Saturday to close its stay at the Texas A&M Invitational. The Revolutionaries dropped to 7-7 after falling in all four games in Texas.
GW 5, Princeton 10
GW went down early vs. Princeton in its 10-5 loss. Princeton assumed a 3-0 lead in the first, before scoring four runs in the third and another two in the fourth to race to a 9-0 advantage. With their backs to the wall, the Revolutionaries made a dent in the deficit with two runs in the fourth thanks to RBI from Madie Hernandez and Allison Heffley.
After Princeton added a 10th run, a Madi Mays RBI single and an Ashley Corpuz two-run home run got GW back within five, but the damage had been done as Princeton held on to win, 10-5.
Anna Reed took her second loss of the season for GW in the circle. Cece Smith and Sophia Torreso each made appearances, as Torreso went a season-high 4.0 innings.
GW 1, Texas State 6
The Revolutionaries went from the home side to the visiting side to play Texas State immediately after game one on Saturday, but the result remained the same as Buff & Blue fell, 6-1.Â
Texas State broke into the scoring in the second inning, plating three early runs to put the pressure back on GW. The Revolutionaries held firm defensively until the fourth, allowing Corpuz's second home run of the day to cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the frame. The Bobcats answered immediately, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth to create a four-run cushion, before adding a fifth to their lead in the sixth.
Corpuz led the offense, going 2-2 at the plate. Smith took the loss - her third of the year - after going 1.2 innings at the start. Reed and Torreso finished out the game, holding the Bobcats to three runs over the remaining 4.1 innings.Â
UP NEXT
The Revolutionaries return for six-straight games at the GW Softball Field next week, which starts Tuesday with a doubleheader vs. Holy Cross (12 p.m. start).
