WASHINGTON- Today, on January 4th, 2025, the GW community remembers Alexandra deMoura and celebrates her heavenly birthday. August 4th, 2024, marked five years since Alex's passing. Her memory is strong within the gymnastics community and GW gymnastics is honored to celebrate her in a new way in its 2025 competitive season.
Â
Alex was committed to her athletics, academics and her team. Her performances were both dynamic and elegant. She lifted up her teammates and held them to her own high standard for success. Alex's smile brightened the room and was contagious to everyone around her. She empowered her teammates with that energy. As a competitor, Alex was nothing short of a powerhouse in the Buff and Blue. A decorated performer, she was twice named to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League First Team for the all-around, among many other All-EAGL accolades she garnered on balance beam, vault, uneven bars and in the floor exercise in her four years.
Â
Alex also had a love and eye for fashion. She displayed her passion for style in her daily outfits and the way she carried herself. Combining her love for gymnastics with her love for fashion gave GW gymnastics to the idea of a leotard in Alex's honor. Steph and Alex's mother, Josephine, worked collaboratively on a leotard design capturing the essence of Alexandra.Â
Â
"It was an absolute joy to work with Josephine as we created the leotard design for the inaugural leotard in honor of Alex. Remembering Alex and talking about her throughout this process was the most beautiful part," said Head Coach Stephanie Worrell.Â
Â
Ideas were then shared with GK Elite sportswear. They embraced every characteristic and created a perfect leotard. The leotard is dynamic and elegant, much like Alex. This captivating design will brighten a room and bring a smile to all who see GW gymnasts compete while wearing the leotard. The 2025 GW gymnastics team is excited to wear this leotard in remembrance of Alex's vibrance and poise. The inaugural leotard in honor of Alex will be revealed on Feb 16, 2025, at the home meet against Cornell, UW La-Crosse and Ursinus, held in the Charles E. Smith Center at 1 p.m. This meet will also incorporate rip current education to empower others through water safety awareness.
"Our daughter, Alex, was an earth angel to us for 24 years. Although we are devastated and deeply saddened by her passing, we will keep Alex's light shining bright by educating others about rip currents and saving lives. We are grateful to GW gymnastics for honoring Alex and her memory," said Josephine deMoura.Â
