Rowing Claims Third Place at Atlantic 10 Championship
5/18/2024 2:30:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Seeking its second-straight A-10 Championship on Saturday on the Cooper River in New Jersey, George Washington rowing had a chance to repeat until the very end. Ultimately it was Rhode Island who took home the title with 51 points, resuming the dominance it's shown of the conference in recent years with its third title in four years, and 10th overall championship, with the lone exception in the four-year run being GW's breakthrough in 2023.
Massachusetts finished in second with 46 points after the Rams of Rhode Island, the Minutewomen and the GW Revs all vied for the crown on a damp morning in Jersey. GW finished with 45 points, one shy of UMass, 12 points ahead of fourth-place Fordham.Â
The Buff and Blue's Varsity 4 boat got the scoring started for GW with a third-place finish in 7:53.112, good for seven points in the team standings, 13.492 behind the first-place finisher, UMass, who was awarded nine points. Saint Joseph's took second in the race.
The V4's effort was followed by George Washington's second Varsity 8 boat, which also medaled with a third-place finish and secured 14 points. The 2V8 boat trailed first-place Rhode Island (18 points) by 6.750, with the Minutewomen earning second (16 points).
With the meet being decided by the Varsity 8 boats, the Buff and Blue tracked the Rams throughout the course, ultimately finishing second in 6:49.544 for 24 points, less than .1 off its time in the morning prelims, but 4.34 shy of Rhode Island (27 points).
GW's Alexa Nealy and Flannery Dunn were honored on the All Atlantic 10 First Team while Mary Grace Konopka earned Second Team honors.
GW seniors Nealy, Caroline Crutsinger-Perry, Ezi Emenike, Yasmeen Darcazallie, Celeste Noraian and Emma Reese were also honored by the conference for graduating this weekend during the post-race ceremony.
