Track in Action at Two Meets this Weekend

WASHINGTON – The George Washington men's and women's track teams return to action this weekend for two more meets. On Friday, GW will compete at the Virginia Challenge hosted by UVA in Charlottesville, Va. On Saturday, the Buff & Blue take part in the Hopkins/Loyola Invitational, hosted by Johns Hopkins and Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore.
Last weekend, GW competed in two separate meets and tallied seven first place finishes in various events. Rachel Horowitz was the lone Revolutionary to earn two firsts, doing so in the 200m and the 400m at the Stevenson Invitational. On the men's side, Ryan Fowkes led the way with a win in the 1500m at the UVA Grand Prix.
Horowitz recorded a time of 25.92 in the 200m and a 58.36 in the 400m to earn gold in both events. GW had a stellar showing in the 400m, finishing with three of the top four finishers. Kayla DeSousa finished in third with a mark of 1:03.26, while Alexia Massoud tallied fourth with a 1:03.54. In arguably GW's best event of the day, the Buff & Blue dominated the 1500m in both the men's and women's races. On the women's side, GW finished with six of the top seven finishers including all the top five. Sarah Mitchell won the event with a 4:40.98, while Una Boylan finished second with a 4:42.34. Olivia Syftestad notched third with a PR time of 4:44.96, while Julia Shanes also recorded a PR in fourth place with a 4:55.21. Kirsten Long rounded out the top five with a 4:58.46, while Catherine Ruffino placed seventh at 5:00.77.
On the men's side of the 1500m, Colin Funk took the gold with a time of 3:59.13. Austin Brotemarkle finished just behind in second with a 4:01.47, while Kevin Conlon placed third with a 4:04.98. Lucas Brown clocked fifth place with a 4:14.48, while Cole McCue finished sixth with a 4:15.23. Brotemarkle also shined in the 800m, taking first place with a time of 2:00.47. In the women's 800m, Rita Mazumder took first place with a time of 2:18.55, while Lola Dinneen placed fourth with a 2:22.58. Shannon Hieber recorded a PR of 2:23.98 for fifth, while Natalie Quinn also earned a PR with a 2:28.48.
At the UVA Grand Prix, Fowkes recorded a time of 3:50.27 to win the event, while Michael Bohlke finished third with a 3:54.41. Jacob Heredia placed 13th with a 4:50.83, with Patrick Castellano rounding out the Buff & Blue finishers with a 4:04.62 for 18th.
This weekend, GW sends six runners to the Virginia Challenge on Friday, while the rest of the team will race at Hopkins/Loyola. At UVA, Fowkes will compete in the 1500m, while Jacob Heredia, Bohlke and Kevin Conlon will take part in the 5K. Syftestad, Mitchell and Boylan will represent GW in the women's 5K. The meet has a scheduled start time of 4:00 p.m. on Friday, with GW's first event taking place at 5:45 p.m.
On Saturday, GW will compete in 16 events with 24 different student-athletes seeing action in at least one race.
