WASHINGTON - The Geroge Washington softball team got back on track on Wednesday as it took down Coppin State by a final score of 8-5. GW improved to 7-10 on the season, including 4-4 at home.

Rainy conditions in Northwest D.C. did nothing to stop the Revolutionaries' offense, which found its legs early and stayed hot throughout. GW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning via an Alena Ramirez two-RBI double and did not trail for the rest of the contest.

Coppin State was able to tie the game on two occasions after GW's first-two runs, but the Buff & Blue had a response each time. After CSU tied the game in the third inning, Reese Torres launched her second home run of the season to deep center field to give GDUB a 3-2 advantage.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, after CSU tied the game again on a solo home run of its own, GW managed three across runs to give itself a cushion. Ramirez opened the scoring with her third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, before Paige Hayward knocked in a run on a single and R. Torres did more damage with an RBI double.

GW got more run support in the sixth inning as Allison Heffley and Maggie Greco each got in on the action with RBI, pushing GW's lead to 8-3. Coppin State didn't go down without a fight in the top of the seventh, cutting two runs off GW's advantage, but it wasn't enough as the Revolutionaries secured the W.

Sophia Torreso and Cece Smith split time in the circle for GDUB, combining for nine strikeouts and allowing just five hits. Torreso made the start, but the win goes to Smith, which is her fifth of the season. R. Torres powered the offense for GW, going 2-3 with three RBI, one home run, one double and one run.

Up next for GW is a trip to the West Coast, where nine Revolutionaries will make the trip to their home state of California to take on UC Davis on March 9-11.
