WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team defeated Towson, 9-0, in five innings at the GW Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon. GW improved to 14-12 in the win and picked up its fourth shutout of the season ahead of its second game of the week vs. CAA opposition, tomorrow against Hoftstra.
First-year pitcher Sophia Torreso picked up her third win and was excellent in the circle, pitching all five innings and allowing just four hits and one walk while striking out four. It was the second complete game registered by Torreso this season and the first shutout of her career.
Offensively, GW attacked with timely hitting and took advantage of a number of Tigers' errors. Mandy Lauth got things started for GW on an RBI groundout in the second, before the Revolutionaries erupted with six runs in the third inning.
The bases were loaded with no outs for Allison Heffley and she started the big third inning with an RBI walk. Williams was up next and drove in a run on an RBI groundout, and Ashley Corpuz followed with a walk to load the bases again and set-up the biggest play of the game for Paige Hayward. Hayward reached on an infield single and forced a Towson overthrow, allowing all three GW runners to score and reaching third herself - later being brought home on a Lauth sacrifice fly to end GW's six-run barrage.
The Revolutionaries entered into run-rule territory in the bottom of the fourth on a Maggie Greco RBI triple and a Heffley sacrifice fly, leaving Torreso to need just three more outs to clinch the game. The Tigers got one hit in the top of the fifth but needed two runs to stay alive, as GW clinched its third-straight win on its home field.
Ramirez and Greco combined at the top of the lineup to go 4-5 with a walk and three runs scored. Heffley, Hayward and Lauth each finished with multiple RBI, while Greco and Alexa Williams each added one.
The Revolutionaries are back at the GW Softball Field tomorrow to face Hofstra. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and coverage will be available on ESPN+.
