WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team defeated Loyola Chicago, 7-5, to secure a series win in its first A-10 matchup of the season. The Revolutionaries have now won two of three games in both of its three-games series this season, and they are above .500 for the first time since Feb. 23, improving to 13-12 overall and 2-1 in the A-10.
Sunday's contest featured a rematch between both team's game one starting pitchers, Cece Smith for GW and Peyton Pepkowski for Loyola Chicago. Both pitchers looked unshakable in the first two innings, but by the third, the tides had turned from game one's 10-0 Loyola Chicago shutout as GW finally cracked Pepkowski.
Maggie Greco, going up against one of her hometown clubs, got GDUB on the board in the third inning as she drove in two runs on a sacrifice bunt and reached third base as the Ramblers had difficulty handling multiple attempts at the plate. Allison Heffley came up to bat next and took advantage of the situation, singling through the right side to bring home Greco.
As it did in game two of the series, Loyola Chicago mounted a comeback, and the Ramblers eventually took the lead in the fifth inning after a pair of two-RBI singles. The Revolutionaries reacted quickly to the lead change and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as Heffley picked up her second RBI of the day on a double. Heffley's double set up Alexa Williams, who provided a vintage A-10 Player of the Year moment, crushing a no-doubt three-run shot to left field to give GW a 7-4 edge.
The Ramblers were left six outs to find at least three runs to extend the game, but they were only able to find one as they dropped the series, 2-1, in their first ever trip to The Vern.
Smith earned her conference-leading 11th win of the season as she went 5.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. Sophia Torreso earned her first save of her career as she pitched the final 2.0, allowing one run off just one hit. Â
GW has a quick turn around as it welcomes Towson on Tuesday and Hofstra on Wednesday for single games at the GW Softball Field. First pitch for both games is set for 2:00 p.m., and coverage of both will be available on ESPN+.
