Revolutionaries collect 10 hits in back-to-back games
DAVIS, Calif. - The George Washington softball team took care of UC Davis on Monday with an 8-0 run-rule victory, clinching the series, 2-1, over the Aggies. The Revolutionaries improve to 9-11 in 2024 and return home for a seven-game homestand which begins Wednesday.Â
All cylinders were firing for the Revolutionaries in the rubber match. GW put up four runs before having to send out its starter Cece Smith, who had one of the best performances of her young career. Smith pitched a five-inning shutout and gave up just four hits and one walk while striking out five in her seventh win of the season.
Maggie Greco set the tone offensively in the first at-bat of the game with a single up the middle - the 100th hit of her career - and finished 3-4 with two runs scored. GDUB kept the line moving in the first and RBIs from Alexa Williams, Paige Hayward, and Mandy Lauth, along with an Alena Ramirez run scored on a passed ball, made it 4-0 early.
GW added one more run in the third on a Hayward sacrifice fly and put the game out of reach and into run-rule territory with three runs in the fourth to make it 8-0. Williams got her second RBI of the game on a single through the right side before Ramirez tripled to drive one in and Corpuz collected an RBI single.
The Aggies looked to extend the game and loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth inning, but Smith tightened up and struck out the final batter of the inning to clinch the win.
GW held a 10-4 advantage in hits and used a quartet of Aggies errors to its advantage. Five different Revolutionaries had RBIs, while six different Revolutionaries scored runs.
The Buff & Blue are back at the GW Softball Field on Wednesday for a doubleheader against UMES. First pitch in Northwest D.C. is scheduled for 12 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
